Luigi Bezzera, the owner of a manufacturing business invented Espresso at the turn of the century. Luigi Bezzera is just trying to find a way to brew coffee faster. He thought if he could add pressure to the brewing process, it would speed things up. Thus the “Fast Coffee Machine” was created. His idea of a quick cup of coffee turned out to be much better than he had planned, what he got was a much tastier and fuller cup of strong coffee, and a much faster process. He found that a faster and more efficient brewing method allowed quality beans to be extracted compared to the over-extraction he had previously experienced. The term “Espresso” means fast in Italian, hence the term.

It wasn’t until later when Desidero Pavoni bought the rights from Mr. Bezzera for espresso machines that are becoming popular. Pavoni was very successful in marketing the product and has probably changed the way people drink coffee ever since. Just look around! Coffee and Espresso shops are popping up everywhere, even in the U.S. Not only is it popular for its delicious seeds, but it also gave us a new place to socialize.

Espresso Timeline:

In 1901 Luigi Bezzera filed a patent for an espresso machine containing a boiler and four “clusters”. Each group can take a different size filter containing coffee. Boiling water is forced through the coffee and into the cup. Ambrogio Fumagelli says that this is the birth of (fast) espresso coffee.

In 1903 Luigi Bezzera’s patent was then purchased by Desiderio Pavoni and marketed on a large scale.

In 1905 the Pavoni Company began manufacturing single espresso machines based on the Bezzera patent.

In 1927 the first espresso machine was installed in the United States. It was the La Pavoni Espresso Machine installed at Regio’s

in New York.

In 1938 Cremonesi designed a piston pump that pushed hot water through the coffee. It was installed in Achille Gaggia’s

coffee shop.

In 1946 Gaggia began manufacturing commercial piston engines. Produce foam or cream layered coffee or cafe’.
